Can ChatGPT read my email? Yes, and here is where it stops.
ChatGPT reads and searches a Gmail or Outlook mailbox once you connect one, and since June 2026 it sends from it too. What OpenAI documents it doing to your own inbox beyond that is shorter than people expect, and any other mailbox needs a different route. Every vendor claim here was read from OpenAI's own pages on a stated day; every claim about ours was measured.

The short version
Yes. Connect Gmail or Outlook under Settings and Apps, and ChatGPT searches, reads and summarises your mail when you ask, and on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise it sends. OpenAI documents no filing, flagging or read-marking on your own mailbox, and no route to a mailbox that is not Google's or Microsoft's. An MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP is how ChatGPT reaches any other mailbox and does the filing, and a Plus account did that in our testing even though OpenAI's page names only Business and Enterprise.

Can ChatGPT read my email? The Gmail and Outlook apps
Yes. ChatGPT calls its connections "apps", under Settings and then Apps, and two of them are mail: Gmail and Outlook Email. Connect one, sign in to Google or Microsoft, and from then on you can ask ChatGPT what came in from the finance team, to find the thread where somebody sent the revised quote, or to pull the action items out of the last three messages about a project. It reads the mailbox inside the conversation you are having with it, and stops when the conversation does.
For Outlook, OpenAI publishes a capability list, and for the signed-in user's own mailbox it reads: search and retrieve messages with their metadata and plain-text body; keyword and structured searches such as from, subject and date; full message text; people and contact lookup; and contact management when an administrator enables it. That is a complete and useful reading surface. It is also, on the vendor's own page, a list with no message write in it, which is where the next two sections start.
Gmail has no equivalent article. OpenAI documents the Outlook app and
the Google Drive app in their own pages and describes Gmail through
the data-controls FAQ and the release notes, so the hard fact for
Gmail is the permission it asks Google for, which is
gmail.modify. Google defines that scope as the authority
to read, compose and send, and to do everything short of permanently
deleting. What ChatGPT actually exposes of that authority is not
written down anywhere we could find.
Whether reading through either app marks a message as read is not stated for either, which is the same silence every vendor keeps and which the comparison page calls the question nobody answers.
Sending
Can ChatGPT send emails from my Gmail or Outlook?
Yes, since . Before that date ChatGPT drafted and you copied the draft into your mail client; the release note for that day changed it. Read on , the two sentences that matter are the plan gate and the approval step:
ChatGPT will create a draft and you can choose to send it without leaving ChatGPT. Sending emails is available on the web for users on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans with Gmail or Outlook connected.

Two things follow from the wording. It is a paid feature, and the Free plan is not on the list. And it is a draft you choose to send, which is the right shape: the message is shown to you and nothing leaves until you say so. OpenAI's app permissions describe the same default more generally, reading from apps automatically and asking "before actions that may have a meaningful effect outside ChatGPT", and sending an email is the textbook case of one.
What the note does not say is as important as what it does. It does not say whether the draft is written into your mailbox's Drafts folder, where you could open it in Outlook and finish it. It does not say whether a reply carries the headers that make it land inside the original conversation rather than starting a new one. And it does not say whether a file can go with the message. On the fourth route below all three are measured: a draft is placed in Drafts, a reply carries In-Reply-To and References, and an attachment up to 10 MB arrives byte for byte.

How to connect ChatGPT to Gmail or Outlook
There are two routes, and the first is the one to try first. The second is for the mailboxes and the actions the first does not cover.

OpenAI's own app: Settings, Apps, Connect
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Apps, and choose Gmail or Outlook Email. Press Connect, sign in to Google or Microsoft in the window that opens, and accept the permissions. On a Business or Enterprise workspace an administrator may have to approve the Microsoft permissions first and switch on each action; on a personal plan it is your own sign-in and nothing else. Reading works straight away; sending needs a paid plan.

An MCP connector: connect the mailbox here, then add one URL
Connect the mailbox to Mailbox MCP first, with a Gmail app password, a single Microsoft sign-in for Outlook or Microsoft 365, or the IMAP settings of any other host. Then in ChatGPT switch developer mode on, create an app, and paste the mailbox's connector URL. Our ChatGPT set-up page has every screen, including the refresh-token check that catches most people.

Check it worked on a message you do not mind
Ask ChatGPT to list what arrived today, then open your mailbox in Outlook or webmail and confirm nothing changed. That last step is the whole test: on the MCP route reading leaves the unread flag alone, and you can see it for yourself in under a minute.

Filing
Can ChatGPT file, flag or mark my email as read?
On your own mailbox, OpenAI does not say it can, and the way it does not say so is instructive. The Outlook app's page lists what it can do for the signed-in user, and every item is a read or a contact action. Then, in a separate paragraph about a different kind of mailbox, it lists exactly the writes a person managing an inbox would want. As read on 11 September 2026:
For supported shared or delegated mailboxes, ChatGPT can read messages, browse folders, mark messages as read or unread, move messages, and send plain-text email from or on behalf of the mailbox.

So the product can browse folders, move messages and change read state, and the page attaches those abilities to shared and delegated mailboxes, the ones a team looks after together, and not to the one you signed in with. Whether that is a documentation gap or a real product boundary is not something a reader can settle from outside, and a reader who wants ChatGPT to file their own inbox should treat it as unavailable until OpenAI writes otherwise. The Gmail side is the same shape from the other direction: the scope it holds would permit labelling, archiving and trashing, and no page states that the product offers any of them.
Through Mailbox MCP the answer is a list of tool names rather than an inference. ChatGPT is handed 31 email tools, and among them are move, flag and unflag, mark read and unread, archive, and report junk, each documented on the tools page with what it refuses. A move keeps the message's flags and its original date, a delete goes to Trash rather than being expunged, and a filing session of a few hundred messages is a handful of calls because the write tools take a set. Every other mailbox
Can ChatGPT read an email account that is not Gmail or Outlook?
Not through anything OpenAI ships. The two mail apps connect a Google account and a Microsoft account, and no vendor, OpenAI included, ships an IMAP connector. If your mail is on Fastmail, Zoho, iCloud, a cPanel host or your own domain, or if it is a personal outlook.com address and the Outlook app turns out to want a work tenant, the built-in route ends there.
The other route is an MCP server, which ChatGPT reaches through developer mode as a custom app. Here OpenAI's documentation and our own testing disagree, and the disagreement is worth quoting rather than smoothing over. OpenAI's page on developer mode, read on 11 September 2026, says:
Apps, full MCP support, and developer mode are available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on ChatGPT web.
OpenAI, Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT
On we connected this server to a ChatGPT Plus account, the entry paid tier, in a web browser, with no administrator involved: developer mode switched on from the account's own settings, the app was created, the OAuth sign-in completed, and real email was read, searched and sent through it. That is a measurement. The sentence above is what OpenAI promises, and the two are different things: the measurement could stop being true on any day OpenAI chooses, and a reader planning around it should know that. Both are on the set-up page, with the date.
Once connected, the mailbox is any mailbox. Mailbox MCP opens an IMAP host with the server address, port and password you already use in your mail client, and ChatGPT reads, searches, sends and files it with the same 31 tools it gets on Gmail. The provider stops mattering, which is the point of a protocol rather than a partnership.
Balance
When ChatGPT's own app is enough
Most people asking "can ChatGPT read my email" will be well served by OpenAI's own app, and a page from a connector vendor should say so before it says anything else.
If your mail is in Gmail or a work Outlook and what you want is answers, what came in, what somebody said, what the deadline was, the built-in app does that with one sign-in and no password to make. On a paid plan it will send the reply too, after showing it to you. Try it first, and stay on it until it refuses something.
If you are on a Business or Enterprise workspace, your administrator controls both routes, and the built-in app is the one they can audit action by action from the workspace settings. That control is worth more to most organisations than any capability a connector adds.
You want the MCP route when the mailbox is not on Google or Microsoft; when you want ChatGPT to file, flag and mark as well as read; when a reply has to thread and a sent message has to be filed once; when a file has to go with the message; or when you want the unread count left alone after a triage pass. Those are the rows where OpenAI's pages say nothing and ours say a number.
If the built-in app has already refused you something, the free tier here is enough to see whether the connector does it.

Whether OpenAI's apps still do what its pages said on 11 September 2026, and whether a Plus account can still add an MCP app. Both move without notice, and the dates on every claim here are there so you can tell how old it is.

The undocumented half
Whether the Gmail app can label, archive or trash your mail. It holds the permission to; no page says it uses it. We report the gap rather than guess across it.

Your data and training
What OpenAI does with what its own apps read. Its Apps page says it may train on that on Free, Plus, Go and Pro if a setting is on, and not by default on Business, Enterprise and Edu. Those are its terms, and it is worth reading them yourself.

Your employer's rules
Whether your workspace permits either route. On Business and Enterprise an administrator decides, per app and per action, and can switch developer mode off for everybody.
Can ChatGPT read my email?
Yes, once Gmail or Outlook is connected under Settings and Apps. ChatGPT can then search and retrieve messages, return their full text, summarise threads and draft replies, inside a conversation you are having with it. The Outlook app's own page lists search, retrieval and full message text as what it can do with the signed-in user's mailbox. OpenAI's release notes name Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise for sending, and no availability statement we could find names the Free plan for either app.
Can ChatGPT send emails from my Gmail or Outlook?
Yes, since 8 June 2026. OpenAI's release note says that with Gmail or Outlook connected you can ask ChatGPT to draft and send emails from the same conversation, that it creates a draft and you choose to send it, and that sending is available on the web for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. No OpenAI page we could find says whether it can attach a file to what it sends. Through an MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT sends from any connected mailbox with attachments up to 10 MB, and we sent real email that way from a Plus account on 1 September 2026.
How do I connect ChatGPT to Gmail or Outlook?
For OpenAI's own connection, open Settings, then Apps, choose Gmail or Outlook, click Connect and sign in to Google or Microsoft. For a mailbox on any other provider, or for the tools OpenAI's connection does not offer, connect the mailbox to Mailbox MCP and add the connector URL to ChatGPT as an MCP app with developer mode switched on. Can ChatGPT read an email account that is not Gmail or Outlook?
Not through OpenAI's own apps: they connect Google accounts and Microsoft accounts and nothing else, and no vendor ships an IMAP connector. Any other mailbox, on Fastmail, Zoho, iCloud, a cPanel host or your own domain, reaches ChatGPT through an MCP server. Its Outlook app page lists search, retrieval, full message text and contact management for the signed-in user, and separately states that for supported shared or delegated mailboxes ChatGPT can browse folders, mark messages read or unread and move them. Its Gmail app requests a scope that would permit labelling, archiving and trashing, and no page states that the product exposes any of that. Through Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT moves mail between folders, flags it, marks it read or unread, archives it and reports junk on any connected mailbox, and a move keeps the message's flags and original date.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need for MCP apps?
OpenAI's documentation says apps, full MCP support and developer mode are available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on the web. Our own testing found more than that: on 1 September 2026 a ChatGPT Plus account switched developer mode on without an administrator, added this server, and sent real email through it. Both statements are on our set-up page with the date, because what OpenAI promises and what a Plus account did on the day are different things, and the second could be withdrawn.
Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to my Gmail?
The risk sits with whatever holds the mailbox credential, and it is the same eight questions whichever connector you use: who holds it, what it can reach, what is stored, and how you revoke it without their help. OpenAI says information accessed through apps may be used to train its models on Free, Plus, Go and Pro accounts if the "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on, and not by default on Business, Enterprise and Edu.
