Can ChatGPT read my email? Yes, and here is where it stops.
ChatGPT reads and searches a Gmail or Outlook mailbox once you connect one, and since June 2026 it sends from it too. What OpenAI documents it doing to your own inbox beyond that is shorter than people expect, and any other mailbox needs a different route. Every vendor claim here was read from OpenAI's own pages on a stated day; every claim about ours was measured.

The short version
- Yes. Connect Gmail or Outlook under Settings, then Plugins, and ChatGPT can access, search, read and summarise your emails when you ask.
- On Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise, it sends too.
- OpenAI documents no filing, flagging or read-marking on your own mailbox, and no route to a mailbox that isn't Google's or Microsoft's.
- An MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP is how ChatGPT reaches any other mailbox and does the filing. A Plus account did that in our testing, though OpenAI's page names only Business and Enterprise.
Reading
Can ChatGPT read my email? The Gmail and Outlook apps
Yes. ChatGPT calls its connections "apps", found under Settings, then Plugins (Apps on some accounts), and 2 of them are mail: Gmail and Outlook Email.
Connect one and sign in to Google or Microsoft. From then on you can ask ChatGPT what came in from the finance team, to find the thread where somebody sent the revised quote, or to pull the action items out of the last 3 messages about a project.
It reads the mailbox inside the conversation you're having with it, and stops when the conversation does.
For Outlook, OpenAI publishes a capability list. For the signed-in user's own mailbox, it reads:
- search and retrieve messages, with their metadata and plain-text body
- keyword and structured searches, such as from, subject and date
- full message text
- people and contact lookup
- contact management, when an administrator enables it
That's a list for reading. On the vendor's own page it has no message write in it, which is where the next 2 sections start.
Gmail has no equivalent article. OpenAI documents the Outlook app and the Google Drive app on their own pages, and describes Gmail through the data-controls FAQ and the release notes.
So the hard fact for Gmail is the permission it asks Google for:
gmail.modify. Google defines that scope as the authority
to read, compose and send, and to do everything short of permanently
deleting. What ChatGPT actually exposes of that authority isn't written
down anywhere we could find.
Whether reading through either app marks a message as read isn't stated for either. That's the same silence every vendor keeps, and the comparison page calls it the question nobody answers.
Attachments are the other gap. The Outlook page now says it outright, in the reading we took on :
Attachments from messages in shared or delegated mailboxes can't currently be retrieved. The list_attachments and fetch_attachment actions work only with messages in the signed-in user's mailbox.
OpenAI, Outlook Email and Calendar apps in ChatGPT
It says nothing about what ChatGPT does with a file once it has it. Gmail says nothing at all.
Through an MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT reads what's inside an attachment on any mailbox, however many files are on the message: a PDF, a Word document, a spreadsheet or a slide deck as text, a photo as a picture, and a scanned letter as pictures of its pages.
You can connect more than one account, too. OpenAI's release notes for say "You can now connect multiple accounts to plugins in ChatGPT", and that it's "Available on all ChatGPT plans across web, mobile, and desktop." Ask for the account you mean by name.
Sending
Can ChatGPT send emails from my Gmail or Outlook?
Yes, since . Before that date ChatGPT drafted, and you copied the draft into your mail client; the release note for that day changed it. Read on , the 2 sentences that matter are the plan gate and the approval step:
ChatGPT will create a draft and you can choose to send it without leaving ChatGPT. Sending emails is available on the web for users on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans with Gmail or Outlook connected.

2 things follow from the wording. It's a paid feature, and the Free plan isn't on the list. And it's a draft you choose to send: the message is shown to you, and nothing leaves until you say so.
OpenAI's connected apps page describes the same idea more generally: "ChatGPT may ask for approval before reading information or completing an action." Under its "Allow low-risk actions" setting, "Sensitive actions may require approval or be denied." Sending an email is the textbook case of one.
What the note doesn't say matters as much as what it does. It doesn't say:
- whether the draft is written into your mailbox's Drafts folder, where you could open it in Outlook and finish it
- whether a reply carries the headers that make it land inside the original conversation, rather than starting a new one
- whether a file can go with the message
On the MCP route below, all 3 are measured. A draft is placed in Drafts, a reply carries In-Reply-To and References, and an attachment up to 20 MB arrives byte for byte.
That includes a file ChatGPT has just made. Ask it to draw something and email it, and the image goes on the message straight from the chat. ChatGPT hands the file over as a link and the server attaches it, on a send, a reply, a forward or a draft.
We tested it on with a 2.8 MB generated image, and every message read back from the mailbox with the picture attached. Nobody downloads anything first. How AI email attachments work has the rest.
Set-up
How to connect ChatGPT to Gmail or Outlook
There are 2 routes. The second, an MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP, is for the mailboxes and the actions the first doesn't cover.
Both start at the same mailbox and end at the same chat. What differs is whether a small box sits between them.

OpenAI's own app: Settings, Plugins, Connect
In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings, then Plugins (Apps on some accounts), and choose Gmail or Outlook Email. Press Connect, sign in to Google or Microsoft in the window that opens, and accept the permissions.
On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an administrator may have to approve the Microsoft permissions first and switch on each action. On a personal plan it's your own sign-in and nothing else. Reading works straight away; sending needs a paid plan.

An MCP connector: connect the mailbox here, then add it to ChatGPT
Connect the mailbox to Mailbox MCP first, with a Gmail app password (and if Google says the setting you are looking for is not available, here's why), a single Microsoft sign-in for Outlook or Microsoft 365, or the IMAP settings of any other host.
Then in ChatGPT open Plugins, install Mailbox MCP from the plugin directory and sign in, choosing that mailbox. Developer mode is the other way in: create an app and paste the mailbox's connector URL.

Check it worked on a message you do not mind
Ask ChatGPT to list what arrived today, then open your mailbox in Outlook or webmail and confirm nothing changed.
That last step is the whole test. On the MCP route, reading leaves the unread flag alone, and you can see it for yourself in under a minute.

Filing
Can ChatGPT file, flag or mark my email as read?
On your own mailbox, OpenAI doesn't say it can, and the way it doesn't say so is instructive. The Outlook app's page lists what it can do for the signed-in user, and every item is a read or a contact action.
Then, in a separate paragraph about a different kind of mailbox, it lists exactly the writes a person managing an inbox would want. As read on 11 September 2026:
For supported shared or delegated mailboxes, ChatGPT can read messages, browse folders, mark messages as read or unread, move messages, and send plain-text email from or on behalf of the mailbox.

So the product can browse folders, move messages and change read state. But the page attaches those abilities to shared and delegated mailboxes, the ones a team looks after together, and not to the one you signed in with.
Whether that's a documentation gap or a real product boundary can't be settled from outside. If you want ChatGPT to file your own inbox, treat it as unavailable until OpenAI writes otherwise.
The Gmail side is the same shape from the other direction. The scope it holds would permit labelling, archiving and trashing, and no page states that the product offers any of them.
Through Mailbox MCP, the answer is a list of tool names rather than an inference. ChatGPT is handed 37 email tools, and among them are move, flag and unflag, mark read and unread, archive, and report junk. Each is documented on the tools page with what it refuses.
A move keeps the message's flags and its original date, and a delete goes to Trash rather than being expunged. A filing session of a few hundred messages is a handful of calls, because the write tools take a set. The filing guide covers what to keep it away from.
Every other mailbox
Can ChatGPT read an email account that is not Gmail or Outlook?
Not through anything OpenAI ships. The 2 mail apps connect a Google account and a Microsoft account, and no vendor, OpenAI included, ships an IMAP connector.
If your mail is on Fastmail, Zoho, iCloud, a cPanel host or your own domain, the built-in route ends there. So it does if it's a personal outlook.com address and the Outlook app turns out to want a work tenant.
The other route is an MCP server. Since Mailbox MCP has been in the ChatGPT plugin directory, reviewed and listed by OpenAI, so it installs like any other plugin. OpenAI says the directory is available across ChatGPT plans, with installing a given plugin depending on your plan and workspace.
Any other MCP server, or a connection you set up yourself, goes through developer mode as a custom app. There, OpenAI's documentation and our own testing disagree, and the disagreement is worth quoting rather than smoothing over. OpenAI's page on developer mode, read on 11 September 2026, says:
Apps, full MCP support, and developer mode are available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise/Edu customers on ChatGPT web.
OpenAI, Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT
On we connected this server to a ChatGPT Plus account, the entry paid tier, in a web browser, with no administrator involved. Developer mode switched on from the account's own settings, the app was created, the OAuth sign-in completed, and real email was read, searched and sent through it.
That's a measurement. The sentence above is what OpenAI promises, and the 2 are different things: the measurement could stop being true on any day OpenAI chooses, and if you're planning around it you should know that. Both are on the set-up page, with the date.
Once connected, the mailbox is any mailbox. Mailbox MCP opens an IMAP host with the server address, port and password you already use in your mail client, and ChatGPT reads, searches, sends and files it with the same 37 tools it gets on Gmail. The provider stops mattering, which is the point of a protocol rather than a partnership.
Saved files
Can ChatGPT read .eml or .msg files?
Sometimes, and it's a different thing from connecting your mailbox. An .eml or .msg file is one message saved out of a mail program. Upload it and ChatGPT reads a frozen copy of that one message. It can't see what came before or after, reply in the thread, or touch the mailbox it came from.
An .eml file is plain text underneath: the headers, then the message, with any attachments packed inside as long runs of encoded text. OpenAI's file uploads FAQ says ChatGPT supports "All common file extensions for text files, spreadsheets, presentations, and documents". It doesn't name .eml, so check before you rely on it.
A .msg file is Outlook's own format, a binary file rather than text. Microsoft publishes it as the Outlook Item (.msg) File Format, used "to represent individual email messages, appointments, contacts, tasks, and so on". OpenAI's list doesn't name it either. The dependable way in is to open the message in Outlook and save or print it as a PDF, which ChatGPT reads.
One thing worth knowing before you upload anything from Gmail. OpenAI says it doesn't train its models on data read through the connected Google apps, and lists the exceptions. One of them is "manually copied, pasted, or uploaded data from a Google app into ChatGPT conversations". So the same message can be treated differently depending on whether ChatGPT read it or you uploaded it.
Through Mailbox MCP you don't need the file at all: ChatGPT searches and reads the mailbox itself. If somebody sends you an email as an attachment, it reads that too. An attached .eml comes back as its sender, recipients, date, subject and text. An attached Outlook .msg is named as an Outlook file and offered as a download link, because nothing on our side reads that format.
Before you start
When you need Mailbox MCP in ChatGPT, and what it doesn't do
You want the MCP route when:
- the mailbox isn't on Google or Microsoft
- you want ChatGPT to file, flag and mark as well as read
- a reply has to thread, and a sent message has to be filed once
- a file has to go with the message
- you want the unread count left alone after a triage pass
Those are the rows where OpenAI's pages say nothing and ours say a number.
What Mailbox MCP doesn't do. One connection opens one mailbox. In ChatGPT, 3 mailboxes are 3 accounts on the Mailbox MCP plugin, each signed in on its own and each with its own permission level.
And nothing runs without your AI. There are no rules or new-mail alerts on our server: ChatGPT does the work, in a conversation or in a routine it runs on a schedule you set.
If the built-in app has already refused you something, the free tier here is enough to see whether the connector does it.

Whether OpenAI's apps still do what its pages said on 4 October 2026, and whether a Plus account can still add an MCP app. Both move without notice, and the dates on every claim here are there so you can tell how old it is.

The undocumented half
Whether the Gmail app can label, archive or trash your mail. It holds the permission to; no page says it uses it. We report the gap rather than guess across it.

Your data and training
OpenAI's connected apps page says it may train on what apps read on Free, Plus, Go and Pro if "Improve the model for everyone" is on. Its Google page carves Gmail out: "Even if this setting is enabled, we do not train our generalized models on data accessed directly from connected Google apps." The exceptions are feedback, what you copy, paste or upload, and ChatGPT's own replies. Read both yourself.

Your employer's rules
Whether your workspace permits either route. On Business and Enterprise an administrator decides, per app and per action, and can switch developer mode off for everybody.
Can ChatGPT read my emails?
Yes, once Gmail or Outlook is connected under Settings, then Plugins (Apps on some accounts). ChatGPT can then search your emails, return their full text, summarise threads and draft replies, inside a conversation you're having with it. The Outlook app's own page lists search, retrieval and full message text for the signed-in user's mailbox. OpenAI names Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise for sending, and no availability statement we found names the Free plan for either app.
Can ChatGPT send emails from my Gmail or Outlook?
Yes, since 8 June 2026. OpenAI says that with Gmail or Outlook connected, ChatGPT creates a draft and you choose to send it, on the web, on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. No OpenAI page we found says whether it can attach a file. Through an MCP connector such as Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT sends from any connected mailbox with attachments up to 20 MB, and we sent real email that way from a Plus account on 1 September 2026.
How do I connect ChatGPT to Gmail or Outlook?
For OpenAI's own connection, open Settings, then Plugins (Apps on some accounts), choose Gmail or Outlook, click Connect and sign in to Google or Microsoft. For any other mailbox, or for the tools OpenAI's connection lacks, install Mailbox MCP from the ChatGPT plugin directory, sign in and choose the mailbox. Developer mode, with the mailbox's connector URL added as an MCP app, is the other way in. Our set-up page walks through both, and which plans can do each.
Can ChatGPT read an email account that is not Gmail or Outlook?
Not through OpenAI's own apps: they connect Google accounts and Microsoft accounts and nothing else, and no vendor ships an IMAP connector. Any other mailbox, on Fastmail, Zoho, iCloud, a cPanel host or your own domain, reaches ChatGPT through an MCP server. Mailbox MCP connects any IMAP mailbox with the server address, port and password you already have, and ChatGPT then reads, searches, sends and files it like any other.
Can ChatGPT move my emails into folders or mark them as read?
For your own mailbox, OpenAI does not say so. Its Outlook page lists reading and contact actions for the signed-in user, and says that for supported shared or delegated mailboxes ChatGPT can browse folders, mark messages read or unread and move them. Its Gmail app holds a permission that would allow labelling, archiving and trashing, and no page says the product uses it. Through Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT moves, flags, marks read or unread, archives and reports junk on any mailbox.
Which ChatGPT plan do I need for MCP apps?
For Mailbox MCP you may not need developer mode at all: since 1 October 2026 it is in the ChatGPT plugin directory, which OpenAI says is available across plans, with installing a given plugin depending on your plan and workspace. For a custom MCP app, OpenAI says developer mode is for Business and Enterprise/Edu on the web. But on 1 September 2026 a ChatGPT Plus account switched it on without an administrator and sent real email through this server.
Is it safe to connect ChatGPT to my Gmail?
The risk sits with whatever holds the mailbox credential, and the same 8 questions apply to any connector: who holds it, what it can reach, what's stored, and how you revoke it yourself. On training, OpenAI says it doesn't train on data read directly from connected Google apps, even with "Improve the model for everyone" on, except feedback, what you paste or upload, and its own replies. Can ChatGPT read .eml or .msg email files?
Sometimes. OpenAI's file uploads FAQ says it supports common text and document files and doesn't name .eml or .msg. An .eml is plain text, and a .msg is Outlook's binary format, so saving the message as a PDF is the dependable route. A file is one frozen message, though: to search, reply or file, connect the mailbox. Through Mailbox MCP, ChatGPT also reads an .eml that arrives attached to an email.
How do I stop AI from reading my emails?
Take the connection away and the reading stops. In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Plugins, choose the app and disconnect it; OpenAI says disconnecting "stops future access through that account". For Mailbox MCP you can also revoke the connection in our control panel, which ends it at our end whatever ChatGPT does. To keep the help but stop it changing anything, choose the Read only level for it there.
